Ghana announce new sponsorship deal

Ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has signed a sponsorship agreement with The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in a deal worth an estimated US$15m.

The deal, lasting three-five years, will see the Corporation become the principal sponsor of the men’s national football team, the Black Cats. The GFA will also establish a joint committee with GNPC to ensure ‘the smooth running of activities.’

Kwesi Nyantakyi, president of the GFA, said of the deal: ‘This sponsorship from GNPC will go a long way. This will alleviate the financial burden on government and also motivate the players and boost their morale in winning the Africa Cup of Nations. With this support from and indigenous company, the players and the technical team, which is also headed by a Ghanaian, will know that the whole nation is behind them.’

Nana Boakye Asafu-Adjaye, chief executive of GNPC, added; ‘The Black Stars is a very potent vehicle for projecting GNPC’s brand as a dependable partner in oil and gas exploration globally. The Black Stars are a perfect fit for GNPC. We both aspire to compete successfully on the global stage in a manner that impacts Ghanaians positively and profoundly.’

Ghana are in Group B of AFCON alongside Mali, Niger and Democratic Republic of the Congo. The tournament begins on 19th January and will end on 10th February.
